• Deuba finally sat Congress meeting

  KATHMANDU, 19 JUNE (ONS): After boycott of the party’s Central Working Committee meetings for about nine months, the ‘dissident’ faction of the Nepali Congress led by senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba finally sat for CWC meeting on Tuesday.

  During the meeting held at the party headquarters in Sanepa, party President Sushil Koirala and senior leader Deuba both underscored the need of national consensus among all political forces to find a way out of the present impasse. The two leaders however did not broach any issue of intra-party dissent during the meeting.

  Deuba said that the constitution has to be drafted by any means based on the consensus among parties. He put forth such options as the reinstatement of the Constituent Assembly for a brief period, formation of a commission, going for elections announced by a national unity government, and going for referendum in connection with issuing a new constitution.

  A press statement issued after the talks said that the November 22 election announced by the government cannot take place at any cost. The announcement of election being an authoritarian step of the government with the intention of capturing state power, the party decides to intensify the nationwide protests against the government’s such step, read the release.

  “Given the present political scenario and constitutional crisis, the Nepali Congress considers national consensus among parties indispensable and decides to take initiatives for talks and negotiations for that purpose,” the statement read.
